Khanna is an ancient town situated on the historic Grand Trunk Road (National Highway No 1), 80 km south-east of
Ludhiana, in
Punjab. It is considered the biggest grain market in Asia. Khanna is a few kilometers north-west of Mandi Gobindgarh in
Fatehgarh Sahib District.
Khanna’s origin dates back to the 16th century. It is thought to be the land between Dahedu and Nabha, gifted by the king of Dahedu to his daughter, Rani Daya Kaur. The original area is called chotta Khanna (small Khanna) and the present extended settlement came to be known as Khanna.
A Purani Sarai (old inn) built by Sher Shah is the major attraction of the town. A trip to the historic sites around Ludhiana or Patiala will be an exciting option. The states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are within 50-225 km of Khanna.
Nearest airport is at Ludhiana. Khanna Railway Station is situated on the Ludhiana-Rajpura line of the Northern Railways.
