Spanning an area of 1,850 sq km, South Garo Hills District is located in the southern part of
Meghalaya. It is surrounded by
West Garo Hills District in the west,
East Garo Hills District in the north,
West Khasi Hills District in the east and Bangladesh in the south.
Baghmara is the district headquarters. The population is 99,105.
Pre-dominantly inhabited by the Garos, it has aborigine races such as
Hajongs,
Rabhas, Rajbanshis, Kacharis and Dalus.
Chitmang Peak and
Balpakram Hills are the two hills of South Garo Hills District. The major rivers are Someswari, Moheskola and Mahadev. The climate is fairly hot for most part of the year. Winter is practically dry. The district has mostly dense tropical mixed forest.
The district cultivates paddy, mustard, sugarcane, jute, potato, cashew nut and cotton. Important mineral resources found in South Garo Hills District are coal, limestone, lithomargic clay, fireclay, phosphorite, gypsum and glass sand.
