Daman

Formerly known as Damao



Daman is a picturesque port town, on the shores of the Arabian Sea, in Daman District of Daman and Diu. It is bounded by Surat District of Gujarat.

Daman was a Portuguese enclave for more than 4 centuries from 1559 to 1961. The Damao Ganga River divides Daman into two parts, namely Nani Daman (Little Daman) and Moti Daman (Big Daman). Nani Daman is a busy commercial area with many hotels and bars. Architectural monuments, churches and government buildings are seen at Moti Daman.

Fort of Moti Daman, Fort of Nani Daman, Se Cathedral and Our Lady of Rosary Church are some of the major tourist attractions nearby.

National Highway No 8, which links the national capital territory of Delhi with Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, passes through Daman. The nearest railhead is at Vapi (12 km). There is also a small airport at Daman which operates flights to Vadodara and Mumbai.
