Suraj Kund is a 100 meter-long water tank located in
Gwalior Fort. The water of this tank is believed to have medicinal power. It is said that King Suraj Sen, who was suffering from leprosy, was cured by Sage Gwalipa with the water from this tank. In gratitude, the king named his capital Gwalior, a name derived from the name of the sage. The tank is considered a sacred place.
