Gwalior Fort, the magnificent monument of
Gwalior in
Madhya Pradesh, dates back several hundred years. Tomars, who came to power in Gwalior during 14th century, made the fort their seat of administration. It later changed hands from the Tomars to the
Mughals, Marathas and the British. It was the place where the Tantia Tope and Rani of Jhansi fought for their freedom.
The fort is reached by a zigzag path that leads to the hill and is bordered by statues of Jain
Tirthankars carved into rock faces. It is built on a hill of sandstone and soars about 100 m from the plains that surround it. From the walls of the fort, one can have a beautiful view of the city.
The complex houses numerous wonders of medieval architecture - palaces, temples and other structures.
