Monkombu is a village located at
Kuttanad in
Alappuzha District. This village is a naturally formed island and is surrounded by backwaters. The name is derived from two
Malayalam words Mavin and Kombu. 'Mavin' means mango tree and 'Kombu' means branch of a tree. It is a major rice-producing center of
Kerala.
Formerly, Monkombu was under the rule of the Maharaja of Ambalapuzha. Monkombu Kottaram (palace) and
Monkombu Bhagvathi temple are the main attractions. Monkombu Garudan Thookam, during
Vishu in April, is a major ritual. Devotees throng the temple in large numbers, during the festive seasons.
Monkombu is easily accessible from Kuttanad. The nearest railway stations are at are at
Alappuzha and
Changanacherry.
