Kuttichathan is a mischievous spirit and a minor god among Hindus in
Kerala. The term implies a weird or an evil spirit. In
Malayalam, Kutti means a small boy or girl and Chathan means a scholar well versed in all scriptures.
According to Hindu mythology, Kuttichathan is regarded as the son of Lord Shiva. He was born to kill an Asura (demon) named Bringasuran, who had already attained the power of being immortal from Lord Brahma. Kuttichathan attained complete knowledge of the scriptures and killed the demon. After this Shiva sent him back to earth to help people suffering from various evil effects.
There are many Chathan temples in Kerala. Prominent among them are Kanadi Kuttichathan Kavu and Karanayil Madom in Thrissur District.
