Malayattoor




Malayattoor, also spelt Malayattur, is a renowned Christian pilgrim center, on the banks of the river Periyar, in Ernakulam District of Kerala. The town lies in the foothills of the picturesque Western Ghats. Malayattoor is about 52 km north-east of Kochi and 8 km from Kaladi.

A meeting place of mountain and river, Malayattoor shot into prominence when the place was blessed by the missionary work of St Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ. A church of St Thomas, built in 900 AD, is a prime attraction. Malayatoor Perunal is a festival held at the church to commemorate the visit of the apostle. Sree Durga Bhagavathi Temple here also attracts devotees from far and near.

Malayattoor is also a place of great scenic beauty. Manappattuchira Lake here provides boating facilities. KTDC Tourist Home near the lake is a hotel with all facilities for tourists.

Frequent buses are available to Malayattoor from Aluva and Angamaly. The nearest railhead is Angamaly Railway Station (17 km). Cochin International Airport is just 15 km away.
