Chennamangalam, formerly known as Jayantha mangalam, is a small township located in
Ernakulam District of
Kerala. This old Jewish colony is famous for a synagogue, the
Chennamangalam Synagoguea, a 17th century structure built in oriental style. It is about 42 km from
Ernakulam and 22 km from
Aluva.
In ancient times, Chennamangalam was the dwelling place of Paliyath Achans, the prime ministers of the Maharajas of Kochi. The residence of their house, known as Paliyam Palace, features a rare collection of historic documents and relics.
The place is dotted with three rivers, seven inlets, hillocks and vast expanses of green plains. The hillocks at Kottayil Kovilakam give a panoramic view of the co-existence of church, temple, mosque and the synagogue.
Other places worth visiting around are the ruins of Vypeenkotta seminary, built in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Malavana Para,
Venugopalakrishna Temple and an ancient Syrian Church. The town is also an important center for handloom weaving and coir making.
Cochin International Airport is about 13 km from Aluva. Aluva Railway Station is the nearest railhead. By road, Chennamangalam is linked with Aluva and North Parur (5 km).
