West Singhbhum District is in the southern part of
Jharkhand. It has an area of 5,351 sq km and lies at a height of 244 m above the sea level. The district headquarters is at
Chaibasa. West Singhbhum is bounded by the district of
Ranchi in the north,
Seraikela District in the east,
Keonjhar and
Mayurbhanj districts of
Orissa in the south and the district of
Gumla and
Sundargarh (in Orissa) in the west.
West Singhbhum is full of hills alternating with valleys, steep mountains and deep forests on the mountain slopes. Koel, Kharkai, Sanjai, Deo and
Baitarani are the main rivers. The majority of total population is tribal. There is a large quantity of agro forestry products (herbs). The important tourist destinations are Bidri, Hirni Falls, Jojohatu, Jupunggutu, Kharsawan, Bandgaon,
Chakradharpur and
Tholkobad.
