Benusagar, a temple town in
West Singhbhum District, lies 12 km south of Majgaon. Named after the large tank on the northern side, it has an island which was once a pilgrim center. You can still find the ruins of those glorious temples and sculptured images here.
It is believed that Raja Benu, the son of Raja Keshna of Keshnagarh, had excavated this island and built a fort around it. Eight phallic emblems of Lord Mahadev had been excavated from here, which reveals the existence of eight temples. The remnants show that the temples were built in the Nagara style of architecture. Similar art works can be found in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and other districts in Orissa.
