Kailash is the name of a Himalayan peak and the mountain range that encloses it. Mount Kailash, often called the King of Mountains, is situated in the Western region of Tibet, close to the Lake
Mansarovar. It has been recognized with Vaidyutaparvata and is respected as the abode of
Lord Shiva. The peak, 6,718 m high, is the tallest in the range.
This ancient and prominent sacred place of four religions, deeply embedded in South Asian myths, is however the least visited. A few thousand pilgrims from the Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon (Tibetan shamanism) religions is all that Kailash gets every year.
