Chamba, nestling in the bosom of the
Himalayas, is a small town overlooking the tumultuous and cascading
Ravi River. The town was founded by the legendary Raja Verman of Chamba state in 10th century and named it after his daughter Champavati. It is 50 km east of
Dalhousie and 24 km north-east of Khajjiar.
A number of ancient temples can be found, significant being Lakshmi Narayan Temple and Hari Rai Temple. Other prime sites are Rang Mahal,
Bhuri Singh Museum,
Champavati Temple, Akhand Chandi Palace and St Andrews Church.
Blessed with scenic snow-clad ranges including Dauladhar, Pir Panjal and
Zanskar range, it is an ideal place for trekking. Manimahesh Lake and Bhatari, boasting an attractive temple, are at distances of 93 km and 45 km.
April to October is the best time to visit. People of Chamba speak in Hindi and
Dogri Language.
Chamba is 580 km north of Delhi. Nearest airport is Gaggal Airport . Pathankot Railway Station, 118 km away, is the nearest railhead. Chamba Bus Station is near Chowgan. Taxis, jeeps and buses are the local means of transport.
