Bharmaur is a beautiful hill station at an altitude of 2195 m in
Chamba District,
Himachal Pradesh. It was the ancient capital of Chamba till 920. Bharmaur is surrounded by high ranges, and delicious apples are grown here in abundance. Bharmaur is 65 km south-east of
Chamba and 80 km north-east of
Dharamsala,
Among the landmarks is Chaurasi, the temple square, which boasts 84 shrines within its periphery. A small source of water named Ardh Ganda can be seen in its corner. As per legend, eighty four siddhas, who hailed from Kurukshetra and visited Manimahesh Temple, meditated here 1000 years ago.
The tallest temple in the square is Manimahesh temple, which is built in Shikhara style. A brass polished life size image of Nandi can be found here. Other significant temples are those of Lakshna Devi and Lord Ganesh. All the temples in the Chaurasia are known for their archeological remains and inscriptions. There is a hill temple dedicated to Bharmani Devi about 4 km from Chaurasia. A trek to this temple is popular. Kugti, a small village, is an interesting spot.
Bharmaur is the base for famous Manimahesh Yatra and various treks. Bharmaur is acknowledged as Shiv-Bhumi, and sometimes as Gadderan, it being the land of seminomadic Gaddis, the shepherds of the area.
Accommodation facilities are available in nearby hotels and mountaineering huts with dormitory facilities. The best time to visit the place is from July and September.
The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation arranges special bus services between Chamba and Bharmaur during Manimahesh Yatra.
