Sutlej River

Sutlej River, the main tributary of the Indus River, originates from the snow filled Mansarovar Lake in Tibet, situated at an altitude of 20,000 ft above the mean sea level. Flowing through the gorges of the great Himalayas, it enters into the Indian territory at Hoshiarpur. The total length of the river is about 1550 km of which 529 km is in Pakistan. Sutlej River is mainly used for power generation and irrigation; many large canals draw water from it. Across the river there are many hydro electric and irrigation projects such as the Bhakra Nangal Dam, Kol Dam, Nathpa Jhakri project and Baspa hydel scheme.
