Ashoka Pillar, a 14 ft high magnificent structure, was developed by the Mauryan emperor, Ashoka in the 3rd century. The pillar was positioned in Meerut, and later it was transported to Delhi by the third sultan of the Tughlaq Dynasty, Firoz Shah Tughlaq, in 14th century.
Ashoka Pillar is made from polished sandstone and tapers towards the top, and it carries inscription of Ashoka promoting peace and harmony in the world through the teachings of Lord Buddha. This old pillar was supposed to have broken into several pieces in 17th century. Now visitors can watch the restored pillar at
Feroz Shah Kotla in Old Delhi.
