King Harischandra of the legends who ruled
Kosala was synonymous with truthfulness. This noble, benevolent monarch belonged to “Suryavamsa” (sun dynasty). He attained eternal glory when he withstood harrowing tests devised by Sage
Viswamitra, to uphold his ideals. Harischandra enslaved himself and family to keep his word. He parted with all his possessions, his family and endured the loss of his only son for his dharma (duty). Touched by his resoluteness, the sage revived his son and reinstated them on the Kosala throne. According to myths, such heroic endurance of untold miseries for his principles earned him a rightful place in heaven.
