Darbhanga District, is located on the banks of the Little Baghmati River.
In ancient times, it was a part of the Brahman kingdom of Mithila, and during the 14th century, it came under the administration of Mughal Dynasty.

Darbhanga is a major trade center for neighboring districts. Located on a fertile alluvial plane, it is rich in sugarcane and tobacco.
