Muzaffarpur, also called the Litchi City, is a historical town situated 36 km to the north of
Vaishali, in
Bihar. It acts as the gateway to Nepal via Birgunj and is a prominent trade center in the state. Muzaffarpur is renowned for its world class litchis.
Muzaffarpur is named after Muzaffar Khan, who built the town in the 18th century. It was an ancient stronghold of the Lichhavi’s. Numerous historic sites dating back to those days can still be found in and around the town.
Muzaffarpur is one of the oldest and largest trade centers on the Patna-Nepal route. Rice and sugar milling and cutlery manufacturing form the staple of the industries. Litchis are exported on a large scale.
Places of tourist interest include Vaishali, Sonepur and Hajipur. The Burhi Gandak River flows through the north of the town.
Nearest airport is at Patna(70 km.) Muzaffarpur Junction Railway Station is linked with Vaishali, Patna and Aurangabad. By road, Muzaffarpur is linked with all major cities and towns in the state.
