Hailakandi District of
Assam is bounded by the state of
Mizoram in the south,
Cachar District on the northern and eastern sides, and
Karimganj District in the western region. It spreads over an area of 1,327 sq km, and is home to half a million people.
Half of the total area is under reserve forest. The land used for cultivation is about 33%. The major crops are rice, wheat, jute, cotton, and sugarcane. It also produces various fruits and vegetables. There are 17 tea gardens in the area making tea as the main industry of the district. The major languages are
Assamese, Bengali, English, and
Hindi. The headquarters town of
Hailakandi is at a distance of 341 km from Dispur, the capital of Assam.
