Jorhat is the administrative headquarters of
Jorhat District, in
Assam. Situated on National Highway 37, it acts as the transit point for the world largest river island –
Majuli. The town is famous for its sprawling tea gardens. Jorhat is about 314 km north-east of
Guwahati.
Jorhat or ‘Jorehaut’, which literally means two hats or mandis – the ‘Macharhat’ and ‘Chowkihat’, which once stood on the two different banks of the river Bhogdoi during the 18th century. It was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom.
Major point of tourist attraction is the Vaishnava Satras, founded by Sankardeva, the father of Assamese culture. Places of tourist interest include the Dakhinpat Satra, Garamurh Satra, Auniati Satra, Kamalabari Satra and Bengenaati Satra.
Jorhat Civil Air Terminal is situated 7 km south of Jorhat. The convenient domestic airport is at Dibrugarh. Jorhat Town Railway Station is at the center of the town. By road, Jorhat is linked with Kaziranga, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh (136 km) and Tinsukia. Jorhat is also well linked with North Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
