Ziro, 5754 feet high, is the administrative headquarters of
Lower Subansiri District. It lies in a picturesque valley of the Atapani plateau, encircled by pine-covered mountains. A popular trekking spot, Ziro is about 150 from
Itanagar and 193 km from Daparijo.
Ziro is home to the Atapani tribe who are fond of hunting. Terrace cultivation and fish culture are their main occupation. The languages spoken are Aptani, Nishi, Hindi and English. A major draw is ten-day long Miko Festival or spring festival of Apatanis held here in March-April.
Ziro has been developed into two parts within five kilometers distance. From high Hapoli or Old Zero (1,750m), the road advances 200 m downwards to the new town Zero. April to November is the best time to visit here.
The prime attractions are Government Handicrafts Center, Parsiparlo archeological site, Orchid Garden and Tarin Fish Farm, which is situated on the outskirts of the city. Tale Sanctuary is about 30 km from Ziro.
Nearby cities and towns include Toku, Hija, Reru and Hari.
By road, Ziro can be reached from Itanagar and North Lakhimpur (Assam). Tezpur Airport in Assam is the nearest airport. North Lakhimpur Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
