Doddeswara Swamy Temple




Doddeswara Swamy Temple is located at Hemavathi town in Anantapur District. It was built during the Pallava reign and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The pillars of the temple remain as fine specimen of clean base molding and delicate decorations. The idols were made of a peculiar type of stone which sounds like a metal when struck. Nandi statue at the entrance of the temple is made of black basalt granite. The walls of the temple are carved with human figures. The pillars in the enclosed porch of the temple are carved with the scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. A 6 ft lingam is seen in the sanctum sanctorum.

The nearest airport is at Bangalore, which is about 152 km south and Hindupur is the nearest railhead.
