Nizamabad, the district headquarters of
Nizamabad District, lies to the northwest of
Andhra Pradesh. The city supports a population of almost half a million with a literacy rate over 50%.
Nizamabad is in an agricultural area that produces sugarcane and rice and is a major market for grain, sugar and vegetable oil. A major rail line and a national highway serve the city. The nearest airport is at Hyderabad which is about 150 km southeast.
Points of interest in Nizamabad include the Saraswati Devi temple. Another popular site is the fort of Indor, to the southwest of the city, constructed by Jains in the 10th century. There are several colleges in the city affiliated to the Osmania University.
