Tanot is a small town on the road which leads from
Jaisalmer via Ramgarh in
Jaisalmer District of
Rajasthan. It is the last civilian outpost in
Rajasthan, some 24 km from the border.
This town lies on the expanse of the Thar Desert and holds a small temple dedicated to goddess Durga. The deity in this temple is believed to be very powerful and is regarded as the saviour of the townspeople. Tanot has assumed historical importance with the findings that the mighty, legendary river Saraswati once had its course through the Kishangarh - Tanot area.
Tanot became famous with the war in 1965, which was fought between India and Pakistan.Tanot has also been identified as one of the areas in the state, rich in oil and natural gas resources.
Tanot is easily accessible by road. The nearest railhead and airport are Jaisalmer Railway Station and Jaisalmer Airport.
