Yamadharman Temple




Yamadharman Temple is a unique temple dedicated to Lord Yama, The God of Death. The temple is situated at Vellalur, a small town on the out skirts of Coimbatore.

The temple, that dates back about 300 years, has a circular dome, an outer wall, and an inner dais and platform. At the entrance there is a shrine dedicated to Andichi Amma, sister of Chittra Puttira. Behind the temple is a shrine of Lord Ganesh with serpent images, which is adjacent to the main chamber leading to the main sanctum. The idol faces south and is seen with a buffalo. The temple also has other deities such as Chittraguptan and Vishnu (Vel Perumal) with a lance. Women are denied entry into the main shrine. Their entry is restricted to the main mandapam. Chitra pournami day is celebrated as a festival during which the book of Chittraputtira is read by the devotees together.
