Walnut Carving

Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in India where the walnut tree grows in abundance. Since being strong, the wood of the tree is used by artists for carving.

Deep carvings up to a depth of 2 inches or more are used for creating the dragon and lotus patterns. This kind of work requires great skill and is expensive. Carvings about half inch deep are employed for the latticework, usually containing the ‘chinar’ motif. This light carving is also used for adoring the thin panel along the edges of a wooden structure, which often contains a central design. This kind of semi-carving exposes the grains of the wood to give it a different look.

Walnut wood acquires a typical shine on getting a wax polish. This is another major plus point in using this wood for artistic works.
