Veerattaneswarar Temple




Veerattaneswarar Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at Tirukkandiyur near Thanjavur. The deities are Veerattaneswarar and Meivarkuzhaliammai.

There is a 200 ft high Rajagopuram with 2 prakarams facing the west in the temple. Between the two prakarams there is a garden and the pillars of the temple are inscribed with attractive carvings. There is a separate shrine for Bhairavar. The holy pools of the temple include Gnana, Shankha and Chakra teerthams. Legend has it that here Lord Shiva slayed the demon Jalandharan with a chakram.
