Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary




Spread over an area of 30 acres, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located 30 km south of Chengalpattu in Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1858, it is the oldest bird sanctuary in India.

The sanctuary is one of the most amazing water-bird breeding grounds in India. Major bird species found here include Asian openbills, cormorants, grey herons, Indian darters, ibis and egrets. It is also a heaven for migratory birds during seasons.

Karikili Bird Sanctuary is nearby. Best time to visit the sanctuary is from November to February.

The nearest airport is at Chennai (90 km). Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station, served by the Southern Railways, is the nearest railhead. There are regular buses to Vedanthangal from Chennai, Tambaram and Chengalpattu.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is 90 km north-west of Auroville.
