Hooghly, Uttarpara Joykrishna Public Library is the first free public library in India. It was established in 1859 by Jayakrishna Mukherjee. This two storied building is located in an area of one acre.
There is a collection of approximately 60,000 books, primary printed materials essential for 17th to 19th century studies, periodicals in Bengali and English and guidance texts.
Apart from its rare collections, the library is well known for its association with famous personalities such as Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Sir William Hunter and Rishi Aurobindo.
