Urumi is a lethal weapon native to
Kerala. It is a thin, three-meter long, double edged sword. Its lethality made it a favorite among the soldiers of the yesteryear kingdoms. Nowadays it is seen in the hands of those practicing
Kalaripayattu, the martial art of Kerala.
Urumi is flexible enough to be wound and worn around the waist like a belt. As easily as it is wound, it can also be retrieved in a moment’s notice. It sharpness and flexibility makes it a very dangerous weapon to handle, which requires a lot to practice for the mastering.
Urumi forms the highlight of a Kalaripayattu show.
