In addition to the 18 major
Puranas, there are an equal number of subsidiary Puranas or Upa Puranas. Sanatkumara, Narasimha, Brihannaradiya, Sivarahasya, Durvasa, Kapila, Vamana, Bhargava, Varuna, Kalika, Samba, Nandi, Surya, Parasara, Vasishtha, Devi-Bhagavata, Ganesa and Hamsa are the upa puranas. The Upa-Puranas too praise the virtues of one particular deity while recognizing other deities as subsidiary.
