Udri is a few kilometers from
Soraba in
Shimoga District. This village is renowned for its ancient temples and shrines built during the reign of the Hoysala Dynasty. The area is dotted with innumerable hero stones, sati stones, and mounds of carved inscriptions of the bygone era. Among the ancient sculptures, Shivalaya at the entrance of the village is remarkable. Its architecture is simple without any sculptures on its outer walls. The ground plan is similar to the Someshwara temple of Pura. A few iconographic representations of Jain images can be seen around the temple. Another Shiva temple in the middle of the village has two well-carved life-size Shiva dwarapalas. The village also has a Lakshminarayana temple built during the Hoysala period. A visit to Udri reminds us of the multiple facets of art and architecture of a bygone era.
