Tulja Bhavani Temple




Tulja Bhavani in Tuljapur is located on a hill known as Yamunachala, on the slopes of the Sahyadri range in Maharashtra. Goddess Durga is worshipped here as Bhavani who is in the form of a 3 ft high granite image, with eigt arms holding weapons, bearing the head of the demon Mahishasura. She is also known as Tulaja, Turaja, Tvarita and Amba. This temple was visited by Chhatrapati Shivaji, who was gifted with the Bhawani sword for success in his expeditions.

This shrine is an ancient Shakti Peetham and has inscriptions dating back to the 13th century. Visitors can enter through two main entrances. Stepping down the stairs, devotees can find the Gomukh Teerth on right side and Kallol Teerth on left side. Taking holy bath in these Teerths is considered auspicious. Amruth Kund and Duth Temple are located in temple complex.

A Siddi Vinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh, is on the left side of main entrance gate and its gateway is ornamented with flowers and creeper patterns. On right hand of the gate is a shrine dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. In the courtyard is the temple mandap with two-side entrance.
