Tula Utsavam is a month-long festival celebrated by the people of
Mayiladuthurai (Mayuram} in the month of Iyppasi (Thula month), on the banks of the
Cauvery. The last day of the month is observed as Kadaimugam, which is believed to be the day on which river-goddesses Ganga, Yamuna and
Saraswati take a holy dip in the Cauvery to get rid of their sins and rejuvenate themselves so that they can accept sins from pilgrims who take a holy dip in those rivers. There is a car festival held a day before when the cars from the Vallalar temple, Big temple and Ranganatha temple go around in their car streets. The town wears a festive look on these days, seasonal shops open up and there is widespread celebrations.
