Tula Sankramana

Theerthodbhava

Tula Sankramana is the first day of Kodava month of Toleyar. This annual festival, known as theerthodbhava, is celebrated in Kodagu District usually on October 17. According to the legend, Goddess Cauvery appears in the form of a sudden upsurge of water in a small tank. Then she gives darshan to the large number of devotees gathered here. On this day, hundreds of pilgrims visit Talakaveri to watch the emerging of holy water from the 'Kundike', the sacred pond in which the river Cauvery rises. They take a holy dip in the big tank in front of the pond and carry back bottles full of holy water from the source of the river. Talakaveri is about 37 km from Madikeri.
