Tsungremmong is a popular festival of
Ao Nagas, the main inhabitants of
Mokokchung District. It is usually celebrated on the eve of harvest in August. A unique feature is that the village gate is closed prior to the festival and hence outsiders are not allowed to participate.
The festival is a venue to present one’s intellectual and physical abilities. Young folk illustrate the stories of their elders. Songs and dances performed by both young and old in colorful costumes are the other accompaniments. Finally, there is a tug of war between men and women, in which men give up to delight the women folk.
