Tripura Sundari Temple

Matabari Temple

Tripura Sundari Temple, one of the 51 pithasthans of India, is located about 3 km from Udaipur, the district headquarters of South Tripura District. Constructed in 1501, during the period of Maharaja Dhanyamanikya, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali.

The idol of Kali is made of reddish black Kasti pathar and is worshipped in Soroshi form. There is also a small idol of Maa Kali called Chotti Maa, which was carried by the maharajas of Tripura during hunting.

According to legend, one night Maha Maya came into the dreams of the king and asked him to shift her idol from Chittagong (Bangladesh) to this place. The temple also has a belief that the toe of the right foot of Goddess Sati fell at this place.

Diwali is the annual festival celebrated in this temple. A large number of people visit here during this period.

A big tank called Kalyan Sagar is close to the temple where fishes and tortoises of huge size are found. The temple is at a distance of 58 km from Agartala.
