Tribal Wooden Tobacco Container of Madhya Pradesh

The wood carving skills of the tribal people belonging to Madhya Pradesh are exhibited in their tobacco containers. The tobacco cases of the Dhurwa and Maria tribes are more finely carved as compared to those of the Bhatara and Dandami Maria tribes.

These pouches are usually spherical, round or diamond shaped. They are also shaped as animals or parts of the human body. Shapes of local fruits and vegetables are among the favorites of these tribals. Special pouches containing a cartwheel are occasionally made. Some varieties are polished and contain lac coating. Some pouches have geometric patterns on their exterior.

Tobacco pouches are usually made using traditional methods, though now some modern techniques have been introduced.
