West Bengal is home to the Santhal, Munda,
Ho and
Oraon tribes. These tribes have their own indigenous handicraft, which they have maintained since the ancient days.
The artists belonging to these tribes use bamboo, cane and creepers for weaving a variety of general-purpose baskets, artistic boxes meant for dowry, fishing traps and bird and animal cages. They also weave mats from palm leaves and grasses. They make musical instruments from wood, bamboo, creepers, hides and gut of animals.
