Tiruvakkarai Fossil Wood Park

Maintained by the Geological Survey of India, Tiruvakkarai Fossil Wood Park is located at Tiruvakkarai in Viluppuram District of Tamil Nadu. The wood fossils are spread over 247 acres in nine separate enclaves. This Petrified Forest, 40 to 50 million years old, has trunks of various shapes lie strewn and half-buried in the soil. It is believed that these petrified tree trunks are the bones of Rakshasa or Demon slain on the spot by the Lord Vishnu. Tiruvakkarai is 19 km east of Viluppuram and 30 km from Pondicherry Town.
