Tiruppaasur Shiva Temple is a delightful shrine situated at Tiruppachur, near
Tiruvallur, in
Tiruvallur District of
Tamil Nadu. This
Shivasthalam is located near
Tiruvalangadu and is a couple of hours drive from
Chennai on the way to
Tirupati. This ancient temple enshrines
Lord Shiva as the presiding deity.
The vimana of the Tiruppaasur Shiva Temple is of Gajaprishta style. The Vinayaka Sabhai with a multitude of Lord Ganesh images is a unique one. The temple features inscriptions from the early Chola emperors. The Ambal shrine is attributed to Kulottunga Chola I (1075 onwards). The temple preserves inscriptions from the period of Vikrama Chola.
Tiruppaasur Shiva Temple is associated with Karikala Cholan and later with the Shaivite Saints who glorified it with their poetry. It is believed that the Shivling was discovered in a bamboo forest by the Chola King Karikaalan, who then proceeded to erect a temple here.
