Tirunelvayil Temple, devoted to
Lord Shiva, is 2 km from
Chidambaram and is close to
Tiruvetkalam Temple, near Annamalai University.
The temple towards east and the highlights are a five tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance and inscriptions from the Nayak period. It houses the shrines of Uchinathar with a sculptured panel of Lord Shiva and Parvati behind, and Paalvannanathar. Also found are the sanctums of Lord Ganesha and Murugan.
It is believed that the great saint poet, Thiru Gnanasambandar, visited here and composed a Patikam.
Vaikashi Vishakam, an annual festival, is celebrated here.
