The Tirap District is covered with high hills and deep gorges. The district takes its name from the Tirap. The area of Tirap District is 2,362 sq km and it has a population of approximately 100,000. It is bounded by Myanmar in the south,
Assam in the north,
Nagaland in the west and
Changlang District of
Arunachal Pradesh in the east. The climate is influenced by high hills, deep ravines and valleys. The period from November to February is cold. The cold season is followed by frequent thunderstorms from March to May. The monsoon runs from June to the middle of October.
Eighty percentage of the total population belong to Nocte, Wancho and Tutsa tribal groups. Most of them live in villages, engaged in farming and allied activities. Agriculture is the main occupation of villagers. The people, by and large, do nature worship. Recently Christianity has found its way into some areas of Tirap District. Ojiyele, Loku, Pongtu Kuh and Ronghun Kun are the main festivals. Assamese, Hindi, Nocte, Wancho and English are the main languages spoken. The headquarters of Tirap District is at Khonsa.
