Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) is located close to
Mcleodganj, a pilgrimage spot in
Kangra District. It was established as a Tibetan Dance and Drama Society in 1959 with the intention to preserve a wide repertoire of musical, dance, and theatrical traditions from Tibet.
The center has a department for research and archives, and a workshop for making costumes, masks, and musical instruments. It also teaches the Tibetan performing arts to non-Tibetans. For children, TIPA runs a school which provides modern academic and traditional Tibetan education along with music and dance.
TIPA holds an annual Folk Opera Festival in April. A number of folk operas, dance programs, plays and concerts are presented on this occasion.
