Thudi is a larger version of
Udukku, a traditional percussion instrument of
Kerala. This hour-glass shaped device is played predominantly during rituals. Widely seen in the northern parts of the state, Thudi has a vibrating and mellow sound, best enjoyed in a group performance.
Thudi is the customary instrument of Panas, a traditional village community of ballad singers. Thuyilunarthu Pattu is a famed ritual sung to the accompaniment of Thudi.
