Thiruvazhiyode Vayilya Kunnilappan Temple

Thiruvazhiyode Vayilya Kunnilappan is a temple at Thiruvazhiyode near Kadampazhipuram in the Palakkad District. The temple stands on a hill known as Vayilyakkunnu. The deity is believed to be erected by Vararuchi about 1500 years ago. In the vicinity there is a temple for Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavati.

There is an interesting story behind the formation of the temple. Once Vararuchi, a poet and grammarian in the court of King Vikramaditya, during one of his travels went into a poor Brahmin’s house for food. Vararuchi set some conditions (in code language) for taking food from there. Impressed by the girl in the house who met all his conditions, he married her. After the marriage, he realized that it was the same Paraya girl, which he had put in a boat and floated in a river some years back according to a premonition.

During Vararuchi's travels along the Nila River, (Bharathapuzha) his wife gave birth to 12 children. Each time she delivered a child, he asked her if the baby had a mouth. If the answer was yes then he told God would feed it if it has a mouth and so she must leave the child. When the 12th child was born, she lied to him. Vararuchi told to consider the child as a god or god-like and kept the child on a hill, which is called "Vaayilyakkunnilappan" (Hill Lord without mouth).

By road, the temple is about 27 km from Palakkad.
