Thiruvathira Puzhukku is a special dish prepared on the occasion of
Thiruvathira festival, a festival celebrated by the Malayalees in the month of
Dhanu (mid-December to mid-January) on the Hindu calendar. This traditional warm dish is prepared with various cooked root vegetables and red beans with a coconut cumin dressing. Traditionally, this Thiruvathira specialty is made with tropical root vegetables such as koorka (Chinese potatoes), kaachil and telinga potatoes and garnished with coconut oil and curry leaves. Potatoes, yams, taro and cassava or yucca may be substituted in this recipe.
