Thiruthanthoneeswarar Temple is an ancient shrine located at Thiruthanthoni, in
Woraiyur,
Tiruchirapalli District. This highly revered
Shiva temple of yore is one of the major landmarks in Woraiyur - the erstwhile capital of
Chola dynasty. It is one of the oldest Lord Shiva shrines in India.
The temple enshrines Thanthoneeswarar as the presiding deity along with his divine consort Goddess Kunkumavalli. The goddess is installed facing north and adorns Ankusam and lotus in her two hands. The other two hands of the goddess are in Abhaya Hastha Mudra and blessing postures. Situated close to the shrine one can see the images of Lord Vishnu, Surya, Lord Saneeswara and Kala Bhairavamoorthy.
Thiruthanthoneeswarar Temple was built in 9th Century by Pandya king Varaguna Maharaja II. The temple features a maha mandapam, ardha mandapam and a sanctum sanctorum. The temple has a two-tier vimana, decorated with sculptures of Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.
