Thirukoshtiyur Sowmya Narayana Perumal Temple




Thirukoshtiyur Sowmya Narayana Perumal Temple is an ancient shrine located about 10 km from Tiruppattur in Sivagangai District of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, revered by the Tamil hymns of Alwars.

The temple enshrines Sowmya Narayana Perumal as the presiding deity along with his divine consort Thirumagal Nachiyar. The temple has a Santhana Krishnan idol in the main sanctum sanctorum. A popular belief among the devotees is that if any woman worships the Lord with a villaku (lamp) she will be blessed with a good husband and child.

Thirukoshtiyur Sowmya Narayana Perumal Temple is considered as the southern Badrinath. The vimana in this temple is Ashtanga and it rises to a height of 96 ft. Most noteworthy feature of the shrine is that the deity can be found in all three postures -standing, sitting and sleeping.

It is said that Shri Peri Alwar has sung about this temple as 'Aayarpaadi'.

Brahmotsavam, celebrated in the Tamil month of Chithirai, attracts thousands of devotees from far and near. Teppotsavam, Aadi Pooram and Vaikunta Ekadesi are other major festivals celebrated here amid much pomp and splendor.
